2006 Ice Fishing Tour Wraps Up
on Piseco Lake

LAKE PLEASANT, NY — When Jake Putnam of Crown Point, NY flopped a 12.25-inch perch onto the ice of Piseco Lake shortly after 7 a.m. he had no idea it would land him a $1,000 check along with the 2006 Ice Fishing Tour championship.

Putnam was one of over 300 anglers competing in the 5th Annual Piseco Lake Ice Fishing Contest held on Saturday, March 4 and sponsored by the Speculator, Lake Pleasant, Piseco Fish and Game Club near the central Adirondack town of Lake Pleasant, NY. The contest was the final leg of this season’s Ice Fishing Tour.

“The locals told me that it would take 13-14-inch perch to take this,” said Putnam indicating that he just didn’t realize the fish had a chance to place in the points. But Putnam, who likes perch filets, kept the 1.03-pound perch and was surprised when he entered the measuring station at the end of the day and found out that not a single perch had been entered during the tournament.

This year’s tour was limited to two events and Putnam had taken third place in the brown trout category at an earlier tournament on nearby Lake Pleasant. The perch, which took first place in its category on Saturday, vaulted Putnam to the top of the tour point standings and at the end of the day he was awarded the tour championship.

Lake trout anglers fared much better on Piseco Lake where 14-year-old Jake LaManque of Floyd, NY had himself quite a day. The young angler not only captured first place with a 28.75-inch laker that weighed in at 5.52 pounds, he also wound up tied for second place in the tour standings and took home a Shappell two-man portable ice fishing shanty.

The Ice Fishing Tour is a series of ice fishing tournaments held in the Adirondack region of upstate New York. It challenges anglers by testing their skills on a variety of waters and species of fish. A point system awards the most successful anglers and at the end of the tour the angler with the most points is crowned Tour Champion.

Although three tournaments had to be canceled this season, the fishing we did have was exciting. Organizers of the Ice Fishing Tour look forward to 2007 and wish to congratulate all of the winners and thank each angler who participated in this year’s events. To keep up with the tour during the off season visit this web site or call the tour hotline at (518) 524-4904.
